Adopting Love: February Fostering orAdopting a New Pet
By ANNIE DINEEN Owner of Fetch & Favor

A MONTH TO CELEBRATE LOVE
February is all about love, and what better way to celebrate than by opening your heart and home
to a pet in need? DC-area rescues always have an amazing group of dogs, cats, and sometimes even
other animals that need a loving home!
HELPING PETS FIND THEIR FOREVER HOME
Winter can be a challenging time for shelters as they manage higher intake rates and lower adoption
numbers. By adopting in February, you’re not only gaining a loving companion but also giving a
shelter pet a second chance. If you’re not fully ready to adopt, try fostering—our local rescues are
always looking for new foster families!

VALENTINE’S DAY PET ADOPTION EVENTS
Lots of our favorite local rescues are hosting events this month! Lucky Dog Rescue has events at
Petsmart and Petco throughout the month; City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue is always looking for
fosters or families ready to adopt, and Homeward Trails is seeking fosters and adopters as well. For
a fun Valentine’s date, make a reservation at the cat cafe Crumbs & Whiskers in Georgetown—their
cats are all adoptable too!
WINTER = MORE TIME INDOORS
The winter months provide the perfect opportunity to bond with a new pet. With more time spent
indoors, you’ll have ample time to help your new furry friend adjust to their surroundings, establish
routines, and create lasting memories. Spending more time inside at home also means you’ll be able
to pet-proof your space and see which things your new pet is/isn’t interacting with.
PREPARING FOR YOUR NEW LOVE

If you’re ready to adopt, make sure you’re prepared! Don’t forget to:
- Pet-proof your home to ensure their safety (especially when adopting a puppy or kitten—these
little ones are still learning and will go through phases that require proofing in different ways!). - Stock up on essentials like food, a bed, toys, and grooming tools.
- Plan a visit to the vet for a health check-up and vaccinations.
- Research training tips to help them settle in.
- Have fun!! Getting to know the unique personality of your new pet and forming a bond with them
is an incredible experience. Enjoy the journey!
