McLean’s TOPSoccer Program

Soccer is more than just a game—it’s a universal language that brings people together, builds confidence, and fosters teamwork. In McLean, the TOPSoccer program is doing just that, creating an inclusive environment where children and adults with intellectual, emotional, or physical disabilities can experience the joy of the game.

BRINGING SOCCER TO EVERYONE TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a national initiative developed by US Youth Soccer that provides individuals with diverse abilities the opportunity to play soccer in a structured, supportive, and fun environment. The McLean TOPSoccer program, ailiated with McLean Youth Soccer (MYS), relaunched in Spring 2023 and has since grown into a thriving, year-round program that welcomes players of all ages and skill levels— completely free of charge.

“At TOPSoccer, every child who wishes to play soccer deserves the right to participate,” says the program’s organizer. “We strive to make sure every athlete, regardless of their abilities, feels welcomed, engaged, and empowered.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE One of the most distinctive features of TOPSoccer is the Buddy system. Each athlete is paired with a volunteer buddy, typically a little older and neurotypical, who works with them throughout the season. These Buddies provide encouragement, ensure safety, and foster an environment of trust and confidence. As a result, strong interpersonal bonds are formed, helping players develop not just soccer skills but also social and teamwork abilities that extend beyond the field.

THE IMPACT BEYOND THE GAME The impact of TOPSoccer reaches far beyond the game itself. The program provides numerous benefits for its participants, including: • Social Skills – Players interact with their Buddy and fellow athletes in a fun, group setting, learning important social behaviors. • Teamwork—Players build trust and learn to rely on others through soccer activities and games. • Perseverance—While some activities may present challenges, players are encouraged to keep trying and overcome obstacles. • Confidence—Success on the field translates to confidence in everyday life, helping players achieve personal growth in multiple ways.

A GROWING COMMUNITY IMPACT At its core, McLean’s TOPSoccer program is about inclusion, empowerment, and community. It’s a place where every player has the chance to shine, every goal is celebrated, and every connection made on the field becomes a lifelong memory. Each week, 5-10 athletes participate in TOPSoccer, supported by a dedicated team of 10-15 Buddies who volunteer their time to make a difference. But the real impact is felt in the community, as families see their children thrive in ways they never imagined. One parent shares, “TOPSoccer has been life-changing for our child. The encouragement and structure of the program have helped build confidence and social skills, and seeing the joy on their face each week is priceless.” Another parent expresses gratitude for the Buddy system: “Our son has formed a genuine friendship with his Buddy. The relationship extends beyond soccer, and it’s heartwarming to see that kind of connection.” Through programs like these, McLean continues to uphold its commitment to community enrichment— one goal at a time.

THE HEART BEHIND THE PROGRAM: TRISHA KNISELY When Trisha Knisely first learned about the US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer program, she knew she had to be part of it. Combining her two passions—soccer and helping others—she played a key role in relaunching the program in McLean. Her dedication and impact led to her nomination for the 2023 US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer Coach of the Year. Beyond the soccer field, Trisha has always been deeply involved in community service. She has volunteered with the Lost Dog & Cat Rescue in Falls Church, has helped distribute food to those in need, and contributes to Christmas toy drives and school supply collections. Her passion for giving back is evident in everything she does, making her a true leader and role model in the community. To expand the reach of TOPSoccer, Trisha has actively connected with local schools and organizations that support individuals with developmental disabilities. Before taking on her role with TOPSoccer, she spent five years as a recreational soccer coach and remains a devoted soccer enthusiast, cheering on her three children as they play at various levels. Her dedication goes beyond the scheduled sessions— she loves seeing her athletes and volunteers outside of practice, whether at church or school functions. “It’s been fun building this community and it makes me happy to see these kids smile.” Trisha shares.
