Your Annual Well-Woman Exam

By Anna Le, MD, FACOG and Payam Kashi, MD, PhD

Welcome to The V Talk — a new column dedicated to open, honest conversations about women’s health. We’re looking beyond disease prevention to explore symptoms, transitions, and topics that impact everyday life. Let’s begin with the cornerstone of women’s healthcare: the annual well-woman exam.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends yearly exams for all women 18 and older, as well as for sexually active women of any age. Depending on your history and risk factors, your visit may include Pap smears or HPV testing for cervical cancer, breast cancer screenings, and other preventive tests.

But the well-woman exam is about more than screenings. It’s an opportunity to discuss personal concerns that affect your well-being — from low libido, painful intercourse, and urinary issues to contraception, pregnancy planning, and menopause. It’s also the right time to address mental health, lifestyle habits, and preventive vaccines such as the flu or HPV shot.

At Annandale OB/GYN, we call this approach “Women’s Health Holistic Healthcare Above the Standard of Care.” We’re here to support women through every stage of life — promoting confidence, balance, and overall wellness throughout premenopause and menopause.

Every woman’s needs are unique, and your care should reflect that. Our mission is to empower you with knowledge, encourage open communication, and help you create a personalized plan that fits your life.
