Finding the Right Pet Carefor Spring Break:What to Ask Before You Book

By ANNIE DINEEN Owner of Fetch & Favor

Spring break is coming up, and while you’re planning your trip, your pet’s care should be just as carefully considered. Whether you’re choosing in-home pet sitting or boarding, making the right choice ensures your pet is safe, comfortable, and well-cared for while you’re away. At Fetch & Favor, we always encourage pet parents to ask the right questions to ensure the best possible fit for your pet and the most relaxed experience for you.

1. KNOW YOUR PET’S NEEDS

Every pet is different! Some pets thrive in a boarding environment with lots of activity, while others do best at home with a sitter. Consider: Does your pet get anxious in new places? Do they need medication or specialized care? Are they comfortable around other animals? Do they have a strict feeding or bathroom schedule? For pets who like their routine, an in-home sitter can keep to their current schedule and preferences. If your pet enjoys social time, a reputable boarding facility may work well.

2. ASK ABOUT EXPERIENCE AND POLICIES

Every pet care provider has different ways they structure their services. At Fetch & Favor, we seek to replicate as closely as possible your pet’s existing routine and preferences in your home but do not board or walk dogs in a group with other dogs, for example. Things to ask: For sitters: Do you have experience reading pet body language? How much time will you be able to spend with my pet, and how closely will you be able to keep to their current routine? Do you have a plan B if there are changes to my schedule or yours? For boarding: What’s the daily routine? How often do pets get exercise? How are emergencies handled? What kind of updates should I expect to get?

3. CHECK FOR INSURANCE AND SAFETY MEASURES

Both professional sitters and reputable boarding facilities should have insurance and protocols in place. Ask about: Liability coverage in case of accidents Emergency vet procedures How they handle unexpected changes in your travel plans For sitters, how they handle emergencies in their own lives that might impede their ability to complete their care of your pet What their procedure is for weather emergencies A good provider will have clear answers and a plan for anything that might come up.

4. COMMUNICATION IS KEY

When you’re away, you’ll want updates on your pet. Ask if the sitter or boarding facility sends photos, texts, or daily reports. Some boarding facilities also have live streams that you can tune into to check on your pet.

5. DO A MEET-AND-GREET OR TOUR THE FACILITY

Before committing, set up a meeting with the sitter or tour the boarding facility. Pay attention to how they interact with your pet and how your pet responds to them. Notice whether they welcome lots of questions and notes as helpful information or seem not to listen or think they have a better sense of how to care for your pet. If something feels off, trust your instincts and keep looking.

6. READ REVIEWS & ASK FOR REFERENCES

Online reviews and referrals from other pet parents can tell you a lot. Look for consistency in positive experiences—reliable care providers should have a track record of happy clients. Professional organizations like Pet Sitters International and the National Association of Pet Sitters are a great resource for finding care providers in your area.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Choosing pet care isn’t just about convenience—it’s about making sure your pet is happy, safe, and stress-free while you’re gone and allowing you to travel without worrying about their well-being! Whether you choose in-home sitting or boarding, ask the right questions to find the best fit. And of course, if you’re looking for personalized care to any level, Fetch & Favor would love to help!
