The Remember Balloons
By Elle Parker
On October 18th, the Alden Theater stage came alive with light and color, bringing a heartwarming and meaningful story to the Northern Virginia community. The production, based on the touching book The Remember Balloons by Jessie Oliveros, illustrated by Dana Wulfekotte, was masterfully directed and choreographed by Dominic Moore-Dunson. This adaptation captivated audiences of all ages, offering a theatrical experience that resonated deeply with both children and adults.
In Dominic’s own words, “I first encountered this beautiful book on a visit to the library with my two toddlers. I was so touched – as a father, as an artist, as a storyteller – I had to find a way to bring this story to the stage.” His vision transformed the poignant story into a visual spectacle, illustrating the emotional journey of families who face the challenges of memory loss, whether due to aging or illnesses like Alzheimer’s.
The story follows James and his beloved grandpa, who cherish their special memories represented by balloons. As Grandpa’s memories begin to fade, his balloons slowly drift away. James, devastated by the loss, discovers that he can hold onto and share these memories with Grandpa, one by one, creating a bond that transcends the loss.
Featuring contemporary choreography, The Remember Balloons blends modern American dance with social dance styles, set to an original score that incorporates jazz, blues, Motown, and classical music. This production not only entertained but also opened important conversations about Alzheimer’s, grief, and memory loss, giving families new ways to communicate and heal.
The Alden Theater’s production of The Remember Balloons was a powerful reminder of the importance of cherishing memories and the deep connections we share with loved ones, making it a truly unforgettable event for the Northern Virginia community.
